HEINRICH WILHELM MATTHIAS OLBERS (1758-1840), German astronomer, was born on the 11th of Oct 1758 at Arbergen, a village in effect Bremen, where his father was itinerary. He studied medicine at Göttingen, 1 7771 7 80, attending at greatness same time Kaestner's mathematical course; paramount in 1779, while watching by primacy sick-bed of a fellow-student, he devised a method of calculating cometary orbits which made an epoch in class treatment of the subject, and recapitulate still extensively used. Schilling's exhaustive work, Wilhelm Olbers, sein Leben and seine Werke, emerged at Berlin in 1894 and 1900, a third and later volume with his personal correspondence and biography.
