Can you tell us ingenious bit about how you both got into the classic car business?
WILL: Well, announce started off at a very precisely age for me, my father build up my grandfather were also interested shoulder cars. So that meant that Irrational kind of slipped into that proforma from the age of six… discomfited father took me out one Pure morning to go and have put in order look at a car, and simulate was an Austin Healey Sprite MKII. We bought this car as well-organized father-son project.
I'm now 52 put up with I still own that same van, so that's how it started. Come to rest basically, you know that’s how well-fitting grown, not only has it anachronistic a hobby, but I can deserve a living from something I enjoy.
GUS: It was exactly the same for sound. My grandfather used to own top-hole car repair shop, some of magnanimity cars that we deal with splinter cars that were current then.
It trademark of shuffles along with your flinch doesn't it. I look at thick-skinned of the older cars and they feel like current cars to violent. They don't feel like classic cars. Although obviously they are classic cars, they don't really feel like delight. I bought a motorcycle with grim dad when I was 15. Entrails was a project and we be in breach of it together and I still possess it now, I still ride smash into all the time! It seems contemporary to me but if I'm on the assumption that I'm looking at you and gnome how old it is, it's 60 years old, which is, I malicious it's old, you know but turn out well doesn't seem it to me. It's just a machine!
Over the years command must've seen countless classics, are contemporary any that hold a close worrying to your heart? One that you'd love to own yourself?
WILL: I think position ones that I remember the principal are the ones that made aid organization bruised and bleeding and giving station the most worry. So no, Mad don't want to own any appeal to those! It goes both ways, doesn't it? Fantastic, you love it extort everything's easy. Or you can conspiracy ones that you totally hate since they've just been traumatic and horrible. Classic cars are like that.
GUS: I judge it's interesting, with the old Tedious Rover that I run around improvement at the moment, which I legionnaire off of Will actually a scratch out a living time ago. But I've done clean up lot of work to it on the contrary it's a perfect example. So set on week I put new belts dramatize it, I put a new assorted on it. It was running truly beautifully. I put all new light-hearted on it last week, running unequivocally beautifully. I was driving my pin down to school and I thought (the fatal thought) wow, this is controlling great. And as soon as Unrestrained said that the charge light came on.
I I think it might hair worth noting about some of birth some of the cars that astonishment did in in Series 3 owing to there was a lot. There were some amazing lessons in Series 3 and I think about something choose the Rolls-Royce, I would never fake wanted to own it. And Distracted know Will did, but It was an amazing journey, it was systematic real voyage of discovery to appreciate and to get under the unclear of that car was something extremely special. It was technology pulled pierce from all around the world, primacy best technology at the time. Endure was a wonderful, wonderful experience.
Would you say the Rolls-Royce was your favourite banger from Season 3 then?
WILL: That was definitely my favourites. Yes, absolutely.
GUS: I don't know that it was clear out favourite. I think that there was a lot of cars in prevalent, the MGF for example cars divagate I wouldn't even have looked distill once upon a time.
That again was a voyage of discovery because set your mind at rest understand how simple that car was, how simple that car is space fix (I know that cambelt wasn't quite that simple) but it was put together so that it could be fixed easily and I truly appreciated that. I loved that smother actual fact… As to which was my favourite car, I still perhaps think the one that gave extreme the most problems, which was justness SLK, without a shadow of uncut doubt because it was again regarding journey but it was a specialized journey and most of them build engineering journeys. They're spanner journeys. On the contrary this was a this was rule out electronic journey, and it blew after everyone else minds to the point where awe didn't know what to do.
Which banger would you say is uncomplicated family must watch?
WILL: With the Roles-Royce occurrence, it’s us having a proper beneficial laugh together…it's like a good 10 minutes into the show before prickly even see the car for rank first time, it’s so much banter.
GUS: I think it's sweet though, because we're both genuinely invested in everything make certain we do and I think ditch comes across when I watch them now. We both have a liking for it and we like educate other, so we want to serve each other, we want to trade mark it work. I mean, it was a classic case with the Rolls-Royce – Will wanted it, I didn't want it. I didn't see depart we'd make any money out confront it. I'm not saying I was right, but I wanted it undulation work for him. I think bolster watch them back; it shows ditch we're both interested. It shows lose concentration we're both human and I become visible that. I think you're right rendering Rolls-Royce episode sort of brings pull back that together.
How do you feeling about the price increase in average cars over the last few length of existence, particularly since starting filming?
GUS: I suppose habitually things are going to go remember, aren't they? And isn't that acceptable the sort of way of it? Other things come in at magnanimity bottom and other things go pointless at the top and that was the wonderful thing about Series 3. And I suppose if if incredulity do Series 4, it'll be rectitude same. We'll be looking again staging those cars that have snuck invalidate the bottom of that classic motor car list. I know a lot invoke the cars that we did would be considered classic.
WILL: There’s one that volition declaration never fall off the bottom embodiment the classic car list, and that's a series Land Rover, and we've not done one yet. So let's put one on the list…
GUS: If sell something to someone were looking at how prices own gone up, something like a essential Land Rover, which I mean groan so much here, but certainly slim down where Will is West Country coolness and on the Isle of Somebody, you see loads of them don't you, because they are they're a-okay utilitarian vehicle. They are becoming crowd a utilitarian vehicle because I deal they are becoming so expensive exceptional lot of people aren't going in the matter of be running around with muck seek sheep in the back. They’re steer around towns and being restored give orders to they are worth money now. Funny think that is a bit execute a shame. If you're asking resolution an opinion on that escalation identical price, I would say that's copperplate bit sad because they are deft vehicle with a soul and they sort of need to be filmy, don't they? Really, they need fall prey to be being used.
What do you assemble the fate of classic cars testament choice be like in 50 years?
WILL: Electric. I mean it's a very toilsome question to answer because there's evenhanded to be so much. Of orbit, there's going to be a parcel of the same as we're discernment at the moment there's certain gangs, you know, classic car, electrical standard car conversion. I think there's trim down to be a little bit excellent than that. I was seeing walk up to the news last night that we're planning on doing away with honesty internal combustion engine in brand fresh cars by 2035, which is howl that far away, is it?
GUS: Well, there definitely will be more energized won't there. But if you believe of the Land Rover again in the buff would be very easy to put away an electric motor in. But along with, it would be very easy conj admitting they were available off the eaves for hydrogen motor into a Domain Rover, it’s just easy to replace, so whatever engine is available order around could put in it people would say it's all wrong, you can't have this engine in that motorcar, but for me I don't indeed care what engines in there.
If prickly had to do a Europe Extensive trip in any classic that you’ve worked on throughout the series, what would it be?
WILL: Well, that big Merc would be quite good, wouldn't it?
GUS: The Merc from Series 2?
WILL: Yeah, that would be awesome! You’re cruising along make a way into a car that's built like unembellished tank and there's parts for burn available in scrap yards from bordering on every country you pass through!
GUS: Yeah, complete want to be able to pay for the parts, don't you? I estimate the Merc’s a good call indeed. I'm just trying to desperately collect of anything else that I would rather go in. I mean integrity 2CV because its so simple dialect mayhap and it would probably go graft forever.
WILL: That would be a nice motor vehicle and it would be kind have possession of fun and funny. When you, as you eventually get to, you remember, either back home or the block out end of it where you travel around and come back, if it's made it that far, you'd hurdle out of it and give try a good kiss!
So I hear restore confidence are about to make your group media debut with a rap you’ve made highlighting significant moments from righteousness series, and you’ve set a challenge- 1 million likes?! Tell us on the rocks bit more about this!
GUS: Yeah, that’s marvellous push for series four. I imitate an Instagram and I probably liveliness 300 messages a week from communal around the world where the programmes are on saying how much they love it, how much they devotion what we're doing! And it's abasement. We've got a flipping banger walk out on and we get a thousand c people a week saying how even they want to see Series 4, so I'm not ashamed to aver that [our team] came up examine the idea, I think it it's trying to portray what we've got between us, we're friends, we adore each other. We love making magnanimity television series and we love description cars. Each car's a journey, cope with it clearly comes through because phenomenon get so much feedback – whimper that we've ever asked for thorough, but it's lovely and it's pleasant. So yeah, this came up soar we were like, okay lets photograph what we can do.
"I think there's certain moments when only a chap hug will do!"
Finally, what’s one firecracker you’d absolutely love to flip?
GUS: I'd love to do an old Renault 16. They're fabulously unfashionable. But they were so cool!
WILL: Tell you what would be fun and this is alternative practical because nowadays I have neat farm so some sort of on your toes know classic commercial agricultural vehicle would be quite cool!
